Normally, when referring to bamboo, especially Luong bamboo, people will immediately think of the image of soaked bamboo, a common material used in house construction in the midland provinces in the north for decades. Soaked bamboo for housing can reach lifespan of hundreds of years.

However, it takes a lot of time to soak the bamboo, at least seven to eight months, even about three years to have its good quality, then the bamboo will be dried under the sun, the bamboo shell becomes white.

Long soaking time and soaked bamboo waste cause odor affecting the environment, not suitable for production. However, in Tre Vua, a bamboo treatment method was found based on the principle of soaked bamboo.

Fresh and raw bamboo,  immediately taken to soak with a certain microbiological content will bring unexpected results. In his experiment, Tre Vua found that the rate of molds in bamboo decreased significantly, to over 80%.

The time of soaking bamboo slats is from 3-7 days depending on the microbiological content and thickness of the bamboo slats, significantly shortening the processing time compare to traditional soaking method, furthermore the soaked water can be reused. For subsequent immersion or for composting organic fertilizer for crops and soil improvement.

With this method, Tre Vua believes that it is possible to increase the competitiveness of Vietnam’s bamboo producers compared to other countries, because this is a method that can completely replace the use of chemicals in bamboo production.

Normally, to increase the durability of bamboo, resist termite, people use some chemicals such as industrial soda, hydro oxygen, borax salts (borax), sulfur or formalin, those chemical is released into the environment causing serious pollution and affecting consumers’ health, there have been some studies in the world shown that borax salt can cause infertility for users.

Microbial treatment of bamboo is a biological application away from chemicals, the microbes used are useful microbes that can inhibit or scramble for food with mold or with harmful microbes, it also has the ability to improve soil and plants.

In the picture it is a comparison between two types of bamboo: bamboo is soaked in microorganisms and bamboo is not soaked with microorganisms.

Both types of bamboo are dried, and kept in natural environment with sun, rain and moisture continuously for 7 days. The results showed that microbial slats (short) had less attack on mold, face down on the ground had a higher rate of mold than the other side, but the mold rate of both sides was negligible with the slats which is not soaked in microbes (long ones).
